The Geneva International Motor Show will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2005. The century since the Show first started has seen us change from steam to benzene, from horses to limousines and from cobblestones to tarmac. The Geneva Show has always been the privileged witness of these changes, the place from which new technical, aesthetic and economic trends are announced, the crossroads for passenger, commercial and sports vehicles, and the marketplace of professionals, amateurs, purchasers and the simply curious. Thanks to its neutral position in the automotive market, as well as the size of its exhibition space, the Show in Geneva rapidly became the undisputed benchmark for the motoring industry : world premiers, prototypes, technical breakthroughs, new equipment, international partnerships and political and social debates on traffic and transportation all take place here every year in March. This book, which is being produced for the 100th birthday of the Motor Show, is a history of this extraordinary exhibition, a journey through the makes and models of the world, a reflection of the technical and human progress made, an overview of the huge social changes brought about by the car and the sporting performances which have been achieved.
Each of the ten chapters covers these five areas using exceptional illustrations in both colour and black and white taken from a variety of sources ; some are previously unpublished, many are surprising and all are relevant. Three hundred pages of adventures in Geneva, in Switzerland and beyond, paying homage to an event which continues to play a central role in the development of the car.
Joëlle de Syon and Brigitte Sion are the joint authors of Circulez, Genevois, y'a tout à voir! (Slatkine, 2002). They have renewed their collaboration on the subject of cars with this impressive, lavishly illustrated work on the Motor Show, for which they have collected the illustrations, identified the sources and written the texts.
